Some manufacturers will insist that the number of coats of polyurethane should be the main consideration when choosing a prefinished wood floor. In fact, a buildup of coats does not lead to improved scratch resistance and longer wear. Also, applying too much polyurethane can result in a finish that is either too soft or too brittle.
